Meet Ms. Varnika Gupta in May 2020 Teacher Spotlight series, an engineering graduate having bachelor degree in Information Technology. She worked with many MNCs and later moved to teaching. She strongly believes that an educator builds good relationship with her students based on mutual respect and trust and sets the love for classroom community.

Tell us about yourself – Your overall experience in education field, National / International experiences, variety of work you have done in the education field.

My name is Varnika Gupta.  I am in this field from past five years. I have been enjoying this field throughout these years. It is a very amazing experience to teach various types of children having different behaviour. I love this profession at the most.

How did you choose the field of education? Was it by choice or some inspiration from someone or a childhood dream?  Please help with more details.

I chose this field of education by my choice as I love studying and teaching. Actually it was not a childhood dream, but gradually I started liking this profession and this field.

What would you like to mention for your greatest achievements in field of education? Which gives you a sense of satisfaction?

As I have told you that I like this profession , my greatest achievement is that my colleagues and my students have been liking me and my way of teaching. I have been very friendly with them and at the same time I am strict as well. 

How has the education system changed as per your view since you were a student yourself?

The rapid changes and increased complexity of today’s world, present new challenges and new demands put on our educational system. There has been generally a growing awareness of the necessity to change and improve the preparation of students for productive functioning in the continually changing and highly demanding environment. 

What are the qualities you think an individual should possess to be a good teacher or work in field of education?

This is the question of the year. What makes a great teacher? I feel that any effort to create a proper list is expected  to fail because great teachers are as different as the student they teach, But here, I can mention few points which should be present :-

1) Passion for teaching

2) Love of kids

3) Love of their subject

4) A willingness to change

5) a work ethic that doesn’t quit

And many more.

How do you handle discipline problems in today’s world? What is the most difficult aspect of discipline for you?

Discipline is not about getting kids to do what you want them to do. That’s what dictators do and we are not dictators, we are educators. Discipline is not control from the outside its order from within. for example we can perform these activities –

1) Greet Students at door

2) Get students focused before you begin any lesson

3) Use positive presence 

If you were to change 1-2 things in our Indian education system, what would be those & why?

A good education system keeps the foundation of prosperity and success for the country. Our system is automatically changing and including new and more options to help students to improve their skills. According to me, the curriculum needs a revision on the prospects they are providing in their education system to strengthen it more.

What is your philosophy of teaching?

A skilful educator builds good relationship with her students based on mutual respect and trust and sets the love for classroom community. When I think about my role as a teacher, the one thing that I constantly have focused on is the relationships that I have built with my students. I enjoy having conversations with them on subjects and issues that are important to them and learn how they are feeling about and experiencing the world.

What is your suggestions or guidance for today’s parents in shaping up children’s personality? Especially in this Online or computer age.

There is a massive parenting shift between our generation and the one before. We’ve come a long way, from when our dad walked in the house and we would jumped out of his chair or how we roam in the streets with our friends during hot days after our parents instructed us not to come back until evening. Parenting is a hard job and it gets harder as our children get older. Our children face much pressure today that we as parents never had to deal with when we were young.

What are the three most important strengths you possess that will make you a successful teacher? Also any weakness in you which you want to improve upon?

AS strengths I can very well say that I have –

- Exceptional ability to handle lesson planning activities according to specific needs.

-Exceptionally well-versed in managing classes by enforcing behavioural rules and ensuring that they are appropriately implicated

- well versed in integrating technology into lessons to ensure a higher level of students’ understanding

Weakness – I am workaholic in nature. I remain focused on completing my work with dedication and hard work.

If you had not been a teacher or not associated with education field, what would you have been and why?

Actually this question comes out to be interesting. I have done my B.Tech in IT. I had worked for different MNC’s after my B.Tech. So what I feel is , if I would not have been in this profession then I would have been  a software engineer in some MNC’s that’s all.

What do you want to accomplish in your profession in next 5 years?

In the next 5 years, I would like to see myself in a designated position in this education field. This position I want to achieve through my hard work and focused preparation for my career.

Any other things you would like to share about yourself, your profession, your hobbies, your views?

Well, if I talk about my other activities, other than teaching and studying , I feel like being relaxed with a soft music and dance workouts. Moreover I also like reading different subject books other than  mine, so as to gain knowledge. I am into spiritual study also so I like to read spiritual books, listen stories about past and also share what I study or listen

TEACHERS SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM

The role of a teacher in society is both significant and valuable. It has far-reaching influence on the society he lives in and no other personality can have an influence more profound than that of a teacher. Students are deeply affected by the teacher's love and affection, character, competence, and moral commitment. 

Yet teachers don't get their due respect and credit these days. We have started a Teacher Spotlight program where we recognise the effort of these silent and true Heroes of our society and tell their story.
