Tell us about yourself – Your overall experience in education field, National / International experiences, variety of work you have done in the education field.
I have been in the teaching profession for 16+ years in school and then started teaching in private for another 16 years. I have been teaching all levels from 1st to 7th standard. I would say it has been a very satisfying and content journey of teaching in all forms.
How did you choose the field of education? Was it by choice or some inspiration from someone or a childhood dream? Please help with more details.
Typical house wife 35 years back had a limited opportunity. I was lucky to have been educated as a B.A. by my parents even though I was a female child. Choosing the career in field of education was an outcome of the intention and the wish to do something meaningful in life. Survival was also a key at that time adding to my determination and choices available.
What would you like to mention for your greatest achievements in field of education? Which gives you a sense of satisfaction?
Love from parents, children and fellow teachers. A lot of respect from management which also resulted in to a family type relationship with the school. The career which I started out of survival needs turned out to be a career of respect and honor. This itself gives me a sense of belonging and attachment for the field of education and to my students. Another sense of achievement comes when I look at my students reaching peak of their professional and personal lives and at the same time still recognizing my efforts as a value add to their education foundation.
How has the education system changed as per your view since you were a student yourself?
Not so many subjects, limited syllabus, limited outside support &infrastructure in form of coaching, mentoring, etc while in today’s world there are coaching classes for each subject and parents are educated enough to give a helping hand. Though the syllabus is now wide spread and yes sometimes I think children in today’s age are quite burdened. At the same time I think that stretching has led to make children learn and adopt more than what we were doing in our age.
Girl child education was a very low priority and a selected segment of the society was only educating girls but now the scenario has completely changed with girls taking lead in all stages and fields across.
Old times we had to go to schools after long travels to get educated but today education is as easily available as in your own mobile screens. E-Learning is the new mantra.
What are the qualities you think an individual should possess to be a good teacher or work in field of education?
Explanation power, Monitor and closely observing the children’s interest in the subject and study material and How can you influence as a teacher with your methodologies and content which can be challenged at every step by power of internet. So you need to guide your students to make the right approach towards quality education. In fact it is very important for today’s teacher to be friends with children to ensure that they allow teachers to guide those making right choices in life.
How do you handle discipline problems in today’s world? What is the most difficult aspect of discipline as per you?
Early age foundation is the key to building a strong discipline amongst children. What I have observed is that when I have been teaching children from the 1st level to 7th level v/s children coming at level 3-4 – the influence of discipline is different.
Stronger the foundation laid, longer and in depth is the discipline inculcated.
What is your philosophy of teaching?
Overall development of a child. Not only academic education but developing the capability of the child to handle life as and when he / she have to face it. Development of character is the epicenter of education and teaching is all about building this child’s character in a constructive manner.
What are your suggestions or guidance for today’s parents in shaping up children’s personality? Especially in this Online or computer age..
Times are changing and we as humans have always been adaptive to changes around and children are the most sensitive part of that.
Need to understand the interest of the child from early age is the key role of parents. Follow his/her passion and guide the children to take up the passion as a field of career. As a parent you need to use your wisdom and sensitivity to know what to encourage and how to encourage a blooming but hidden quality of your child.
In today’s world practically everything can be converted in to a career, so it is not difficult at all to mold your child’s life considering their own desires and wishes. This will ensure the best role a parent can play to bring out the best in your child as an outcome.
What are the three most important strengths you possess that will make you a successful teacher? Also any weakness in you which you want to improve upon?
My strength is my strong ambition to lay out the strong foundation in my student’s lives. For that I have always tried my best. My will to never give up on any child at my hand has always helped me to get through but has also taken its toll on me some times.
Another 1 is to be a child with a smile while you are teaching. It always helps both ways i.e. for yourself and students to every now and then let the child within you come out and play with them. It builds a special bond and can lead to wonderful changes you may want to drive in your students.
While teaching for long hours and some time with difficult students, Patience takes a tough test and I have observed momentary failures in those times and I continuously monitor myself to let it not push me over the edge.
If you had not been a teacher or not associated with education field, what would you have been and why?
I would have taken a social service for the poor segment of society. May be I would have given all required individual contributions to help the needy.
What do you want to accomplish in your profession in next 5 years?
Continue to the add value to the lives of my students. I would also like to participate in constructive improvement of education methods for my children i.e. demand of the modern times.
Any other things you would like to share about yourself, your profession, your hobbies, your views?
Many around us are capable and want to achieve a lot in their lives but society is not fare to support all of them. Sometimes they lose out financially, sometimes lack of motivation, sometimes lack of understanding from others, sometimes purely lack of response and purely lack of opportunity. Thus I would really want the matured individuals to keep their eyes, ears and mind open to help individuals achieve their dreams with whatever support they can provide.

TEACHERS SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM
The role of a teacher in society is both significant and valuable. It has far-reaching influence on the society he lives in and no other personality can have an influence more profound than that of a teacher. Students are deeply affected by the teacher's love and affection, character, competence, and moral commitment.
Yet teachers don't get their due respect and credit these days. We have started a Teacher Spotlight program where we recognise the effort of these silent and true Heroes of our society and tell their story.
