What Is Good Sportsmanship?

Good sportsmanship occurs when teammates, opponents, coaches, and officials treat each other with respect. Good sportsmanship is when people who are playing or watching a sport treat each other with respect.

Sports are a great way for kids to have Learn many things with fun while staying fit. Sports also teach important life lessons like:

1. Working as a team

2. Learning how to be a good sport

3. Overcoming challenges

4. Controlling emotions

5. Taking pride in accomplishments

But it's not always easy to keep it together when it feels like winning is everything. Help your young athlete keep a healthy attitude about sports and develop the tools to deal with the stress that comes with competing.

How Can Kids Learn To Be A Good Sportsman? Accepting one's success with humility.

Kids might not know how to show they are good sportsman. Teach them about qulatities a good sportsman must have such as: 

1. Have a positive attitude.

2. Give their best effort.

3. Shake hands with the other team before and after the game.

4. Support teammates by saying "good shot" or "good try". Never criticize a teammate for trying.

5. Accept calls and don't argue with officials.

6. Treat the other team with respect and never tease or bully.

7. Follow the rules of the game.

8. Help another player up who has fallen.

9. Take pride in winning but don't rub it in. 

10. Accept a loss without whining or making excuses.

Stress 

Competing always leads to some stress. And that can be good — a little stress helps the body face a challenge. But too much stress can take the fun out of a sport and make it hard to perform.

How to Deal With Stress in Sports?

There will always be some stress in sports, so kids need to know how to deal with it.

Trying different ways during practice can help them find what works best for them. 

They can try these things:

  • Deep breathing
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Going to a happy place 
  • Visualizing success
  • Mindfulness
  • Having a routine
  • Thinking positively and developing positive self-talk

What's a Parent's Role in Good Sportsmanship?

Kids learn how to be a good sport from the adults in their lives, especially their parents and their coaches. As soon as your child starts competing in sports, it's important to be a good role model. And any teams your child plays on should have coaches that encourage good sportsmanship.

Parents and coaches who emphasize good sportsmanship help young athletes learn respect for others and self-control. These skills can help them manage other parts of their lives, and help them develop into mature, respectful, and successful young adults.
